UDT Asia took place on 17 – 18 January 2017 in Singapore. To maximise engagement opportunities, the event ran in parallel with MilSim Asia, AOC Electronic Warfare Singapore and Remote Healthcare Asia.
This year the conference had impressive level of seniority and scale with over 170 unique visitors and 17 VIPs and 22 speakers from 19 nations. With regional representation from Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Republic of Korea the event united individuals from the underwater defence community.
Given the proliferation of maritime threats and island claims, Military and relevant Government Bodies in Asia are actively looking to further understand the underwater activities by enhancing their existing platforms with cutting-edge technological innovations. This trend was seen in the post conference survey reports that illustrated the focus areas of the undersea leaders which includes unmanned systems, naval platforms and equipment’s and the amphibious sub-surface watercraft.
Some of the highlights of the conference were the keynote presentation delivered by Rear Admiral Futakawa from the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force on the strategy and vision for Japanese Navy, Thailand’s expanding navy capabilities and strategic vision by Captain Rodmanee from the and Vice Admiral (Retd) Kobayashi a former commander from the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force who shared his expertise on how lithium ion batteries in submarines gives greater discretion and endurance for conventionally powered submarines.
